Whole Food Plant Based Diet – what is it?

A Whole Food Plant Based Diet is different from a simple Plant Based Diet which is really just a more relaxed, less strict version of veganism. A WFPB diet involves basing your diet on Whole Foods, as close to nature intended as possible with nothing good removed, and nothing harmful added.  Thus white pasta is not generally acceptable as the fibre and vitamins and minerals are lost when the whole grain is stripped of the outer coating, brown rice is preferable to white etc. Some minimally processed foods are just fine such as canned tomatoes, and frozen vegetables and some processed condiments which are eaten in small quantities are fine. The main focus of your plate however should be complex starches such as whole grains, all types of potatoes and starchy vegetables such as pumpkin and squash; all types of vegetables especially green leafies like kale, spinach, silverbeet etc; pulses and legumes like lentils and beans and all types of fruit.  If weightloss is  your focus then nuts, seeds and avocado should be used sparingly.
